Homework policy
Mirani State
School has adopted the following
Education Queensland
policy in relation to homework.
New homework guidelines for Queensland State
Schools will help children establish a balanced lifestyle that allows time for
activities with family and friends.
We have consulted with our
school community to ensure a common-sense framework for students, teachers and
parents.
The
homework guidelines for different age groups are as follows:
In the Prep year, generally students
will not be set homework.
- Homework
in Prep involves daily home reading and sight word practice, as introduced by classroom teacher.
- Homework in Years 1 and 2 could be up to - but
generally not more than - an hour each week
- Homework in Years 3 and 4 could be up to - but
generally not more than – 90 mins
- Homework in Years 5 and 6 could be up to - but
generally not more than – 2 hours each week
- Individual programs aimed at a student’s learning
needs may be issued.
- Specialist subjects may have some home time
requirements
- Students in our Instrumental Program are required to
practise 20 min per day on 3 days per week.
All students should learn words/spellings and number facts, as well as read, everyday.
For our younger students, it is
important that parents get involved by reading books to them and encouraging
them in a range of activities.
For the older students, parents
can help them balance the amount of time spent completing homework, watching
television, playing electronic games, playing sport, cultural pursuits and
doing chores.
Good communication between
teachers, students and parents is also very important to ensure students reach
their full potential.
