Principal News - 20th March

Last week I travelled with Mrs Woodland, Mrs Wilkins and Ms Bankie (Curriculum Co-ordinator) down to the Sunshine Coast region with crews from Marian SS and Northview SS.  Our mission was to engage with some teaching leaders in the area of Problem Solving and Reasoning in Mathematics.  The agenda perfectly aligned with one of our 2018 school priorities; ‘Embedding Problem Solving & Reasoning in Mathematics’.
All staff from all schools found the professional development extremely worthwhile and motivating, having the opportunity to observe lessons in classrooms and engage closely with 3 experts over the 2 days as part of a small group inside a school.  One of the key elements of problem solving and reasoning is having the time to have mathematical conversations to formulate plans, justify answers, discuss errors, investigate multiple answers, analyse misconceptions, etc.  Mathematics is all around us; at home, in the shed, in the kitchen, at the shops, when travelling, etc.  Don’t forget the benefit of informal mathematical discussions with your child, it is a great way to develop deeper understanding not just recall.
Next week our Term One Progress Reports will be sent home.  These tick & flick reports are a school based document designed to give parent/caregivers a snap shot of how their child is travelling so far this year in each Key Learning Area (KLA).  Please be mindful that this is a ‘progress’ report of how your child has started school in KLAs and a satisfactory now may not transfer to a satisfactory or ‘C’ on the official Semester 1 Report as a result of ongoing assessment.   Also, some areas may not have been covered in-depth this term and some teachers may indicate N/A (Not Applicable) due to the shortness of Term 1.  Like all reports, it is just as important to refer to the Effort column as the Achievement rating.  Please feel free to arrange an interview with your child’s teacher should you have any concerns or queries.
Last Friday evening we held our annual Trivia Night in the Parade Area. We had 17 teams participating and plenty of fun was had by all!!!  Huge thanks to Dan Wilkins with his P&C crew for the BBQ, staff helpers, all the students who helped set up with Mr Mullins, Miranda Creese (child minding) and helpers, Fiona (Tuckshop) and all the helpers who chipped in.  A special thanks must go to Mr Brown for ‘blinging’ up the evening with his audio-visual enhancements of the questions.  A great, fun night and all funds will go back to our students this year in the form of resources, as well as a contribution to our long term project, providing permanent shade to the multi-purpose court.  Thanks everyone who was able to attend the night!
Finally, on Friday we will have our senior swimming carnival (9-12 years).  This is a school day and attendance is a school expectation.  Parents / Caregivers it is your responsibility to ensure attendance. Student attendance and participation promotes teamwork, commitment, house/school spirit and habits that will benefit your child in high school and beyond.  All the best to all swimmers - be proud and part of the ‘Mirani have-a-go attitude’…we are!!!
Cheers, Bruce
